My son’s favorite drink is lemonade. He asks for it everywhere we go. He specifically requests to eat at places he knows has it (I’m looking at you Chick-fil-A.) Recently, my husband explained to him that it’s just lemons, water, and sugar. You would have thought we told him the secret to eternal life. He would randomly and repeatedly tell me how lemonade is made. Finally, I asked him if he’d like to make it himself. He was ecstatic!
It’s an easy activity your kids can help with. My son loved rolling the lemons on the counter to loosen the juices and twirling the lemons around on top of our hand juicer! Making lemonade is his new favorite activity. When asked what he’d like to make for his preschool teachers for appreciation week, that he could draw them a picture, make cookies, anything; homemade lemonade is what he chose.
And to take this refreshing treat one step further as those hot summer months’ approach, lemonade and strawberry popsicles! By rolling fresh strawberries in sugar and adding the juice of 1 additional lemon, you compensate for the flavors typically lost in the freezing process.
Because what better treat is there after a well played t-ball game than popsicles!!
You may be wondering why I chose to feature a recipe as basic as lemonade. While it is absolutely delicious, for me, it was more about the experience and bonding with my son. Sometimes it can take the innocence of a child to remind you to slow down and enjoy the simple things; that something as easy as making your own lemonade can also be thrilling.
Recipes for both treats are below!
